The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August by Claire North
Harry August is a kalachakra — when he dies, he is reborn to live the same life again, but retaining all the memories of his previous lives. With the help of these memories and others like him, members of the Cronus Club, he is able to live a comfortable life… until history starts to change. Someone is meddling with the timeline, speeding up technological progress and assassinating members of the Cronus Club. Harry must find out who is meddling and how, in order to save himself and the world from destruction.
Claire North has written a compelling and entertaining first novel. Harry August is a likeable, well-rounded character, who the reader can’t help but root for in his multi-life quest to hunt down his quarry. The plot moves along at a brisk pace, helped by the short chapter length, and the author’s writing style is transparent and easy to read, making for a real page-turner. An excellent first novel, nominated for the Arthur C. Clarke Award and winner of the 2015 John W. Campbell Memorial Award for Best Science Fiction Novel. Highly recommended. |
