Golden Son by Pierce Brown
In this middle volume of Pierce Brown’s Red Rising trilogy, we find Red rebel Darrow fully integrated into Gold society, serving in the military of the ArchGovernor of Mars. The action soon moves to Luna, where Darrow ferments civil war between the Houses of the Society in an attempt to overthrow the Sovereign, leading to a final climactic battle for control of Mars.
Quite a few trilogies suffer from ‘middle book syndrome’, not having the flash-bang hook of the first volume or the final spectacular climax of the last volume. Not so with this trilogy — if anything this second volume is more action packed and broader in scope than the first, with the action becoming interplanetary and the body count soon racking up, as civil war commences. A shock ending will also leave you wanting to read the final volume to discover the outcome. A real page turner, with an above average plot and prose style when compared to similar ‘uprising’ series such as The Hunger Games. Recommended. |
