When Wells Met Welles
In Autumn 1940, an extraordinary coincidence brought together those two masters of storytelling (and near namesakes), HG Wells and Orson Welles for a conversation on KTSA radio, a local station in San Antonio, Texas.
HG was in town to address, of all things, the United States Brewers Association and Orson was there to deliver a town hall forum address.
This was too good an opportunity to overlook and the radio station invited them in for a talk.
HG is, of course, the author of sci-fi masterpiece 'The War of the Worlds' and Orson famously caused near panic throughout the United States with his radio adaptation of the novel in 1938.
This short clip of the discussion survives and covers subjects ranging from 'The War of the Worlds' through World War II to 'Things to Come' and ending with a plug for Orson's new film, 'Citizen Kane'.
